Marathon warning from insurer
This week's London Marathon could lead to a contents insurance nightmare, Direct Line warned today.
According to the firm, the majority of the race's 30,000 participants will not have taken out cover for valuable possessions such as mobile phones and mp3 players.
In order to combat this problem, the insurer is advising runners to take out a home insurance policy which covers personal possessions when they are taken outside the property.
Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home Insurance, commented: "Running is a fantastic way of keeping fit, as those taking part in the London Marathon this weekend will testify - however anyone who goes running, whether in a race or just for fun, faces the challenge of carrying valuables when on the move.
"Additionally, if you head out with your mp3 player or mobile phone, remember to back up your collection of songs or phone numbers; while insurance will cover the replacement of the item, these have a greater personal worth than their sale value."
According to Direct Line, around £7.5 million-worth of personal possessions could be "on the run" with the marathon's participants this weekend.
