HSBC loses data disk
One of Britain's biggest loans lenders, HSBC, announced yesterday that it had lost a computer disc containing personal details of 370,000 customers.
The bank admitted that the data had been lost by a courier from its Southampton insurance offices.
An HSBC spokesman commented: basically it has got lost from A to B the reinsurer we sent it to is doing a thorough search for the disc. We will do anything we can to find it."
He added: "There are no financial details there in terms of banking details [in the lost data]; there are no address details or anything like that."
The data disc is thought to contain details of customers' dates of birth and insurance details such as the value of the cover, the policy number and whether or not each customer smoked.
Last year, HM Revenue and Customs lost discs containing personal details of 25 million Britons in a similar courier mix-up.
The Financial Services Authority is to launch an investigation into the latest data breach, the BBC reports.
