Government ups green commitment
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), along with environment secretary Hilary Benn, has announced new 'green' initiatives affecting UK homeowners.
Firstly, a new free advice line for people trying to reduce their carbon footprint, known as ACT ON CO2, was unveiled.
The Green Neighbourhoods Initiative will also give a 'green makeover' to 100 separate districts in England, which aims to cut carbon by 60 per cent in the affected areas.
Along with the two consumer-targeted schemes, power firms are to be affected by the third government green initiative.
The Carbon Emissions Reduction Target scheme has now come into effect, doubling the obligation for energy providers to help their low-income customers to become more energy efficient.
A total investment of £1 billion over the next three years will now go towards increasing insulation in homes along with other ways of energy saving - which can reduce bills as well as help the environment.
