Bank account transitions 'should be smooth'

Tips and hints on moving bank accounts have been offered by financial website Moneysupermarket.com.

According to head of savings at the site Kevin Mountford, looking for an account provider that makes transitioning funds and direct debits a "smooth process" is of paramount importance.

The service provided by banks has been prominent in the news recently, with the High Court case on accounts' controversial penalty charges yet to be closed.

A BBC poll also found earlier this year found that almost half of bank customers rejected the idea that they should be charged for going over their overdraft limit - and that almost a third felt it was "difficult" to get a complaint to their account provider resolved.

Mr Mountford advised: "Make sure that you deal with a bank who gives you the right promises in terms of the switching process - typically, you would want a dedicated team handling that switching process; you would want to make sure that they handled it right in terms of your salary and in terms of direct debits going out.

"It can be a complicated process but the responsibility for coordinating that should be with the new bank."
