Men 'more likely to save'

Men are saving more in savings accounts than women, according to new research from Yorkshire Building Society.

Figures from the firm suggest that males are 50 per cent more likely to hold such an account.

Yorkshire Building Society also found that 62 per cent of people hold more than £1,000 in a savings account.

However, 37 per cent of this total were found to not be holding savings in a tax-free Individual Saving Account (Isa) - meaning that they are leaving themselves potentially out of pocket.

Chris Edwards, head of mortgages and savings at Yorkshire Building Society, commented: "We were shocked to see that such a high proportion of savers don't have an Isa account.

"Anyone with any amount of savings should grab [one] as soon as possible to make sure they get the most benefit of the tax free allowance."

The upper limit for annual Isa savings increases from £7,000 to £7,200 when the new financial year begins on April 6th.
