Islington 'most expensive for insurance'
The upscale North London district of Islington has been named as a high-premiums insurance hotspot by consultants EMB.
According to the firm, buying cover for their car or property costs local residents an average of £745.
Islington contains some of the wealthiest streets in London - and also some of its most crime-ridden.
As insurance is partly predicated on risk of theft, this has pushed premiums up.
Karl Murphy, a partner at EMB, said: "Insurance premiums are typically higher in cities than rural areas because of the combination of high crime and unemployment rates; about half of a contents premium will be based on the likelihood of theft.
"Quite simply, Islington has a high density of young, unemployed males and it is this section of the population that is most likely to commit crimes against property and motors."
